Kotaku is reporting that the Japanese version of Fallout 3 will be receiving a few nuclear bomb-related edits. First, they note the the character Mr. Burke has been removed from the side-quest 'The Power of the Atom,' making it now impossible to detonate the nuclear bomb in Megaton. Additionally, the name of a weapon was changed as it was deemed "inappropriate" for Japan. Check out the video above for a segment of the censored content. Beware, though, it's full of spoilers.
According to the report, "The online reaction from the Japanese users seems to be largely disappointment to these edits." If that's the case, then it's possible that Bethesda could have a change of heart if the Japanese community is truly vocal enough about their opposition to such changes.
Before you start making knee-jerk reactions to any kind of censorship, keep in mind the atrocities committed at the end of World War II and Japan's potential sensitivity toward this kind of content. On the flip side, it's not like everyone who may be deem it offensive is forced to play Fallout 3 or even experience said content should they play the game. Still, as a strong supporter of artistic freedom, the need for more mature content in videogames, and revised ratings systems, I find myself torn on this issue.
