BioWare has made its mark by telling the finest stories in the medium. That's why BioWare's builder community puts the emphasis on the word "community." It starts with the new BioWare Community Network site.

The new community site will replace the existing forums and includes a variety of social networking tools, including blogs, polls, forums, and album creation.

Crafting a good game level is equal parts artistry and knowledge of design fundamentals.
The cooperative module creation that the new social networking site and builder tools facilitate will be responsible for bringing together modders with different skillsets and proficiencies. Bringing together a disparate set of skills will allow groups to create finished modules that can far exceed what any one member could have put together. Members of the community site can outline their talents and join group projects that can make use of their expertise. These teams can upload their works-in-progress, complete with version control. It's an effort to make it easier for anyone, be they artists, writers, voice actors, or programmers, to find ways to contribute to the creation of new adventures, without having to be a jack-of-all-trades.

Those familiar with BioWare's Neverwinter Nights Aurora Engine toolset will quickly find that the Dragon Age toolkit presents a far more powerful array of powers for the budding world builder. I sat in on an event held for the established NWN builder community, who are expected to remain loyal to BioWare and make the transition to Dragon Age. Reactions from these experienced modders were overwhelmingly positive.

Scripting is at the core of the Dragon Age toolset, allowing you to customize nearly every possible aspect of the game experience. It's both powerful and easier to use than in previous engines. I have minimal experience with coding, but was somehow able to follow along during demonstrations thanks to a handy autocomplete function that made it easy to fill out lines of code with minimal busywork.

The NWN Community's Jassper is working on an area in this adventure.
Level creation is handled from a very painterly perspective, with a palette-driven interface that will feel at home to those familiar with 3DS Max. You can even select 3DS Max-style controls, if that's your thing, as an alternative to the NWN controls. You can control all sorts of different visuals, from the lighting to the shrubbery. You can lay down bricks and stones, and you can control the wind, defining exactly how your flags will flutter. Laying down objects is far easier than I'd have expected, as you can set objects to "snap to" the terrain, aligning themselves perfectly with the groundwork you've laid.

A Song of Ice and FireFX
The event attendees were impressed by the toolset's art tools. The Visual Effects (VFX) editor demonstration was of particular interest. With it, modders can create professional-quality effects for the game, our example being how to create a flame. Variables to tweak and modify abound, from the speed and movement of the particles to the color palette that changes as the effect animates. The creation tools allow a particular creation to appear natural-looking or to reflect seemingly random effects and properties. It's the ease with which one can create one of these effects that was most impressive. Figure out how to tweak the various properties and you can have a unique-looking flame, glow, or other effect up and running in minutes.

BioWare Community Moderator Beerfish shows that the morph editor allows you to create your own unique character faces.
The head morph editor allows you to start with a basic template and use an array of sliders to modify that face in any of countless different variations. In only a short while you can create a face that fits in as naturally as those you'd find in-game. The ease-of-use here is again a selling point: One of the community members (BioWare forum moderator Beerfish) gave a presentation to his peers on how to work with morphs. These modders have only had access to the tools for a very short while, but the speed with which they've been able to grasp its use is remarkable.

The conversation editor allows you to do far more than choose what lines are spoken. You can attach plot flags and scripts to any given line in a dialogue sequence, assign camera and actor positions, smoothly integrate cut-scenes, cinematics, and animation to these lines, and so on.

Module creators want to tell powerful stories, and popular opinion at the event was that the cut-scene editor will work wonders in this capacity. There are elaborate tools for setting up complex (or simple!) cut-scenes, with multiple camera views, shifting perspectives, close-ups, and of course the running narrative to tie it all together. It's a tool that will undoubtedly give the machinima crowd a reason to stand up and take notice. It's cinematography made simple, without sacrificing customizability or power.
